Eating disorders often begin in teen years or in young adulthood and include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. Most people who struggle with anorexia and bulimia have a disturbed body image and may use extensive measures such as inducing vomit, use laxatives, diuretics, excessive exercise and sometimes fasting to lose weight. Individuals with binge-eating disorder may typically binge in response to negative emotions.
This disorder is linked with obsessive-compulsive personality traits. Those people battling anorexia nervosa are preoccupied with their weight, body image, and being thin.
It involves binge eating and behaviors to counteract weight gain including excessive exercise, inducing vomit; use of enemas, laxatives or diuretics not to gain weight. These people maintain their body weight.
These people suffer emotional distress over their binge eating and are not fixated on weight or body image. They do not control their weight by restricting calories or purging as compared to those with anorexia and bulimia.
